Summer break marketing in India means reaching students in May and June, when campuses are shut, hostels are empty and the audience is scattered across hometowns. Campus activations stop, but the audience does not: students are online for longer, travelling, interning, preparing for exams or waiting for results. This guide is part of our youth marketing section and explains which channels still work, which are dead until July and how to use the quiet weeks to prepare for the next session.
The brands that waste money in summer are the ones that try to run a campus plan with no campus. The brands that gain are the ones that switch to hometowns, creators and preparation.
What happens to students from May to June
Most colleges finish exams in April or May and reopen between late June and August. In between, the audience changes shape:
- Continuing students go home. Hostels empty within days of the last paper. A student from Patna who studies in Pune is now in Patna.
- Some stay for internships. A smaller group remains in the college city or moves to a new one for a summer internship, often unpaid or on a small stipend.
- Exam preparers stay put. Students preparing for competitive exams stay in coaching hubs such as Kota, Delhi and Patna, and their routines hardly change.
- School leavers become an audience. Students who have just finished Class 12 are choosing colleges, a group that overlaps with our fresher season work.
This is why a national campaign plan for summer needs a map of home towns, not a map of campuses. For the wider student base, remember that India has about 4.33 crore students in higher education (AISHE 2021-22, Ministry of Education), and most of them leave their campus city during this break.
What stops working
| Channel | Why it stops | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Campus stalls and sampling | Campuses are closed or nearly empty | Pause; resume in July and August |
| Hostel-based ambassador missions | Ambassadors have gone home | Switch to home-town missions or pause stipends |
| Fests and college events | No fest season until October | Move to online events and creator content |
| College WhatsApp class groups | Groups go quiet | Use them for announcements only, not campaigns |
| Society partnerships | Societies are inactive | Plan with society heads for July recruitment |
Most first-time brands lose money by keeping a campus plan alive in these weeks. Cutting spend is a legitimate answer.
What still works
Hometown creators
A creator filmed at home, in a small town, doing a local summer routine reaches students in the places they now are. This is the best fit for brands that want reach in tier-2 and tier-3 towns, where fewer brands appear. Our influencer marketing creator campaigns service builds these sets by region, and we brief creators on moments rather than scripts. Label every paid or barter post with #ad or #collab as ASCI’s influencer guidelines require.
When we ran Bombay Shaving Company’s Sensi spray with 37 creators and dermatologists, the top dermatologist reel crossed 1M+ views (case study). Creator-led video of this kind does not depend on a campus, which is why it suits the summer weeks.
Internships and skills
May and June are when students look for internships and short courses. On platforms such as Unstop and Internshala, students search for internships, competitions and certificates. Brands in edtech, productivity apps and skill-building can reach students at the moment they are most open to learning. See our edtech campus marketing page for that category.
Travel and local leisure
Students travel in summer: home, hill stations, beaches, friends’ towns. Travel, snacks, power banks, bags, cabs and rental brands fit. Student budgets are small, so content should show cheap, easy trips and meetups, not luxury.
Gaming, OTT and music
With long days and fewer commitments, students spend more time on games, streaming and music. Brands in these categories, and in snacks and beverages that go with them, benefit from creator tie-ins, meme formats and live streams. Our meme marketing work builds content around these moments, and our guide to meme marketing for college students shows how.
Preparing for July
Summer is the best time to set up your next campus phase: shortlist colleges, recruit ambassadors online, finalise creative and send permission requests to colleges, so that fresher season starts with approvals in hand. Our campus ambassador program section covers recruitment in detail.
A hypothetical summer plan
For example, a snack brand wanting to stay present with students across five tier-2 cities through May and June. This is an example, not a past result.
| Week | Action | Indicative spend |
|---|---|---|
| Early May | Brief 10 hometown creators across five cities; plan content around exam-end relief | ₹60,000 |
| Mid May | Creator reels, a college-meme-page collaboration, a “summer snack” challenge | ₹1,20,000 |
| Late May | UGC contest with small prizes; track entries by city | ₹40,000 |
| June | Recruit ambassadors for July, send permissions to 15 colleges | ₹50,000 |
| Total | Five-city, creator-led summer plan | About ₹2.7 lakh before GST |
That is close to our creator-only starting point (from ₹2 lakh). A multi-city version with a UGC contest and ambassador recruitment often falls in our ₹5 to 15 lakh band. Our UGC campaigns service runs contests like this.
The ambassador question in summer
Ambassadors are the hardest group to keep active in May and June. Three options:
- Pause. Stop missions and stipends, keep the WhatsApp group alive with updates.
- Switch to light missions. Ask ambassadors to share content from home, collect a short feedback form or recruit a friend for the next semester.
- Reward the break. A certificate or a small voucher for ambassadors who stay active keeps them with you for the next session.
Whichever you choose, tell ambassadors the plan before the last exam so they do not drift away. The pattern that fails is silence: a group that hears nothing for six weeks.
Trade-offs
- Lower scale, lower cost. Reach is lower than during the semester, and so are costs, but cost per outcome can be good.
- Hard to measure. Without campus locations, you rely on creator links, codes and form fills. Set these up before launch.
- Competing with holiday content. Online feeds fill with travel and exam-result content, so creative must be distinctive.
- Shorter attention to brand. Students at home are influenced by parents and siblings, and a message that works at a hostel may not work at the dinner table.

Questions people ask
Do college students respond to marketing during summer break?
Yes, mostly online. Screen time rises, they follow creators and meme pages closely and many search for internships or courses. They do not respond to campus stalls or sampling, which need students physically present. Switch the mix from campus to digital and hometown formats.
What is the best marketing channel for students in May and June?
Creators and short video, with college meme pages, UGC contests and internship platforms as supporting channels. For tier-2 and tier-3 audiences, regional-language creators filmed in home towns tend to do best. Choose the channel by what the student is doing: travelling, learning or relaxing.
Should brands pause campus ambassadors in summer?
Often yes, partly. Keep the community alive with updates and offer light, optional missions such as content from home or a recruitment drive for the next semester. Fully active missions rarely work without campuses, so do not pay stipends for work that is not possible.
How much does summer break marketing cost?
A creator-led summer campaign across several cities can start from ₹2 lakh before GST. Adding a UGC contest, ambassador recruitment and regional creators across more cities moves it into the ₹5 to 15 lakh multi-city band. Summer can cost less than fest season, though reach is also smaller.
Can I prepare for fresher season in summer?
Yes, and it is the best use of the quiet weeks. Shortlist colleges, recruit ambassadors online and send written permission requests in May and June. Approvals can take two to three weeks, so brands that start in June are ready when orientation begins.
Is summer a good time to launch a new product to students?
It can be, if your product works online or at home. A creator-led digital launch avoids the clutter of fest season. If your launch depends on sampling or campus events, wait for July and August when students are back.
